Hope for Dotfuscator CE users

The price jump from Dotfuscator CE to the full professional version is $0 to $2000 in six seconds 🙂

The good news is that the folks at PreEmptive Solutions (makers of Dotfuscator) have finally realized that we poor struggling developers have been suffering from sticker shock for quite some time now and they have decided to come to our rescue with Dotfuscator Micro Developer Edition (MDE).  It’s priced at $399 a year (subscription price) and includes the following features:

  • Ability to integrate Dotfuscator MDE through a command line interface and MSBuild
  • Integration with Microsoft Visual Studio
  • Regular product updates
  • Access to dedicated customer support staff
  • VS2010 CE features available today
    • Tamper detection and defense
    • Application expiry logic
    • Feature tracking logic

Still more than some rivals, but less painful to your wallet.

  1. Another use/role for MDE is as a production version of what is now Beta 1 of Dotfuscator CE Visual Studio 2010. Dotfuscator CE 2010 includes significant extensions that support the injection (post-build) of
    * Feature and session monitoring (streaming usage data to a developer-specified endpoint),
    * Application expiry dates,
    * Tamper defense and notification, and
    * Opt-in/Opt-out logic.

    Microsoft first announced this functionality at PDC2008

    If you want a detailed walk through (including vs2010 b1 screen shots), check out Bill Leach’s blog entry at http://blogs.preemptive.com/post/Whate28099s-new-with-Dotfuscator-in-Visual-Studio-2010-Beta-1.aspx

    For a MSFT employee blog entry on this same functionality, visit http://blogs.msdn.com/terryclancy/archive/2009/05/19/visual-studio-2010-new-features-extensibility-points-and-partner-opportunities.aspx

    So today’s Dotfuscator MDE provides
    * Production equivalents to CE 2010
    * MSBuild and Command Line Interface support for automation
    * Visual Studio integration
    * Access to PreEmptive Support
